As I have a keen interest in all things healthy (I have an MS in Ayurveda), I wanted to make our wedding as healthy and Ayurvedic as possible. Although Ayurveda has its roots in India, its knowledge is universal. Anything which supports better health can be considered Ayurvedic in a sense. What did we do to make this as healthy as possible an event?
1. Healthy environment - the event was held in the Vedic Villa, a community building in Maharishi Vedic City built according to the ancient principles of Sthapatya Veda - architecture in accordance with natural law
2. The date - according to the principles of Vedic Astrology, depending on when you start a marriage (have a wedding) or start any important thing in life, this will affect the outcome of the action. As the saying goes "Well begun is half done". So we contracted a Vedic Astrologer - a Jyotishee, to determine which date would be the most favorable to have the wedding on.
3. Since the time of the wedding was recommended right before lunch time, we decided to offer lunch as part of the reception. Ayurveda recommends to have lunch right around noon, and have lunch be the largest meal of the day.
4. The food - we contracted Sabitha to prepare the lunch. She's an Indian lady who used to have a restaurant in town. She makes delicious food following the basic principles of Ayurveda - vegetarian, freshly cooked food with pure ingredients, lots of spices to help digestibility of the food, and most important of all, cooked with lots of love!
5. Wedding cake - we contracted a bakery in Ottumwa which bakes allergen-free cakes. It was vegan, meaning egg-free, and did not contain any gluten. It also did not contain any ingredients at risk of being GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms) and it was 95% organic. And, it was still delicious!
6. We assured that any cutlery and plastic plates we used, were toxin-free (BPA free etc).
7. The toast - the beverage used was a non-alcoholic, organic apple juice sparkler by Martinellis.
8. We offered hot water with the meal - the best Ayurvedic beverage to support digestion during the meal, rather than cold water (although we noticed most did not use it ;-) )
8. We paid homage to the Vedic tradition before we started the ceremony and listened to special chantings according to Vedic tradition (PM me if you're curious to find out more)
9. Ayurvedic preparations for the wedding - according to Ayurveda, it is good to have purified oneself before entering marriage. The bride is recommended to take a special herbal bath, before the wedding (if you need the recipe, send me a message)
10. I assured that all make-up I used was as toxin-free as possible. I used brands such as Dr. Hauschka, and Ilia, and I looked up other brands to assure they were low in toxins (https://www.skincarisma.com). For skin care I used Maharishi Ayurveda creams and other Ayurvedic formulas.
